"President of Syria slamming Bush's America on C-Span"

Bashar Al-Assad is really laying it all down at the Arab League
summit(televised on C-Span), pulling no punches at all, speaking
passionately and seemingly without much of a script.

He's saying it's time for all Arabs to band together to resist American
hegemony. He said this coming war was first about inspections, then
about UN resolutions, then about previous civil rights violations, then
about "democratization" of the region. He said these shifting excuses are
just a mask for the real reason the Americans want this war -- to attain
total control over the middle east and its resources and to reshape the
map in their interests.

Then he said that Americans would laud his democracy if he imprisoned
100,000 anti-war dissidents and call him a dictator if he allowed people to
openly attack American policies. He's telling all Arabs they can no longer
sit on the fence, it's time to choose whether or not to bend over for the
yankee imperialists or resist and save their own nations. He said it's the
same as when the Great Powers of Europe humbled the Ottoman Empire
and made all Arabs subservient.

Man, this speech is really a call to arms against America. I can't really
disagree with most of what he said, but it saddens me that all Americans
are being equated with the fascists of the Bush cabal. The damage being
done to America's reputation right now, and especially when they attack,
and doubly especially if they use their "shock and awe" tactic, is going to
take decades to undo. Smirk might wind up with the entire world united
against him.
