Fritz Hollings Nails Powell---(bravo, bravo, old warrior)
If ya' gotta a minute I have to tell you about the encounter today between Fritz
Hollings and Powell----a true Mastercard moment..priceless. (I'm paraphrasing; do
not have original transcript). This is Powell's appearance before the Senate Budget
Committee:

Fritz begins by asking Powell what the "mission statement" is regarding Iraq.
Powell gives the usual disarmament/regime change, blah, blah. Fritz produced a
statement by Gen. Myers and says that it indicates something different. And Powell
does the usual politicians yack, yack about in the end, it's precisely the same
(yeah, right..whatever).

Fritz says: "Mr. Secretary, I believe you would agree with me that Saddam has to
be personally removed. He's an evil man and if he totally disarmed tomorrow, we
can't leave him in power because he would simply begin building weapons the next
day." Powell smiles and beams (he has Dems scared of evil doers, you know).
Fritz says: "Now, Mr. Secretary, I've never felt Saddam was a theat to the United
States. But do you know who he is a threat to?? Why, it's Israel, Mr. Secretary."
Fritz praises the brilliance of Israel's secret intelligence (which I took as basically
an insult to all our Key Stone Cops combined). Fritz says: "They don't have the
luxery of running to the UN; they have to act immediately. If they thought Saddam
was an imminent threat, why, they would have taken care of it by 10:30".

Fritz says: "Mr. Secretary you say you want this as swift and efficient as possible.
So, why don't you join up with the Israelis and just go in and take him out instead
of starting a war?" Powell stiffens. Powell says, "Senator, it's not as easy as that.
Saddam's entire years as dictator have been all about designing things to hide
and protect him".

Fritz says: "Well, bomb his palaces". Ahhhhh, Powell is ready to make a kill of the
ignorant old man. Powell says, "Senator, I can assure you that if we targeted the
palaces that is the LAST place Saddam would be!!!!!"

Fritz leans over and says, "I assume you know where I am going with this?" Powell
looks clueless. Fritz says: "So why are you going to flatten Baghdad?"

Starpass mentally gives standing ovation!!--indeed, if it's all about having him out
of power and you admit no one ever knows where he is, then why do you have to
take out an entire city (or many cities)knowing that he won't be there anyway!!!
MSNBC pulls plug...CNN had pulled it long before.
