WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell
predicted
on Thursday that a new Iraqi government would tend to give
preferential treatment
to countries that had helped overthrow Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein.

Powell told a Senate subcommittee that after an invasion the United
States did not
intend to dictate the future of Iraq and it would be up to a
post-Saddam
government to decide "who they will enter into various economic
arrangements
with."

But he added, "It would seem to me that the people of Iraq, now
having been
liberated, might glance around and see who helped in that liberation
and
participated in that liberation and who did not."

He was answering a question on what economic role in Iraq he
envisaged for
France, which favors giving U.N. arms inspectors more time before any
U.S. attack
on Iraq.
