Wes Clark can look Republican fence sitters square in the eyes and say "I understand why you have voted Republican.  Here's how Kerry/Clark delivers for you."  He can honestly tell independents "I know what you are going through.  Here's how Kerry/Clark offers you a clear choice."
It won't sound like the same old politics coming from Wes Clark because he's got the Republican and Independent chops.
