Oh, it's not that good a story. :-) She was invited to speak in
Delware, so I cruised on down just to meet her. It was a Women for
Clark event. I went with signs, had Clark pins all over my hat and
jacket, and looked like a complete nutcase. Really. Especially
since NO ONE else in the audience was decked out at all, not even
staffers and volunteers. I felt really stupid, but I had dressed
hoping for some media attention.
I got there and this lovely older woman begged me to sit in front
of her in the front row because she didn't want to be photographed.
I had planned to hide in the back and hold up my sign, but what the
heck! So I sit in the front row and no one wants to sit next to
me. :-) Get photographed, etc. Senator Biden comes in and Gert is
there with entourage. Senator Biden is to introduce her. She comes
over by me and asks "Do you mind if I sit here?" DUH! Of course
not, I scoot over a little and she sits right down. Remember, I look
like a lunatic. So we get our pictures taken a lot. :-) I talked
to her briefly about how much I admired her husband, etc. She gets a
mug of tea from a staff member and sits politely sipping. blah,
blah..... I was in shock she was actually nice enough to ask
permission to sit next to me - and not have one of her staff members
ask the lunatic to move so she could sit in peace.
She gets up to give her speech, it's wonderful. Warm, funny, full
of stories about how tough their life was and how they TRULY
understand what it is like to live pay check to pay check. Like many
of us. She mentioned the butt thing too. What made her a Warrior
Chick was her attitude in taking on the media blackout. How the
media treated her husband. She was ferocious and attacked the same
way we would. Not using bad words or stooping to personal attacks or
screaming - but, you know - just being fiercely protective. Like if
they ever got in her way, she would fight to the end to protect him
just like we would. She does have a great open laugh, I think she
has a great sense of humor, a deep respect for the differences in
people, and a real commitment to doing good in the world. I just
adored her, really. I think she would laugh a lot at some of what
we've said and would understand where it came from. And I think she
would appreciate our desire to fight for him too. She's probably
seen a lot of that already.
And yes, I think she's totally secure in her relationship to the
point she could laugh at and appreciate our exuberance...
I did get her autograph on my sign, and told her I had been too
embarrassed to ask Wes when I met him, and she said "Good heavens,
why? You should have just asked!" LOL. I will next time!
As for the tea mug - she left it on the floor so I promptly stole
it. :-) If I find out who it belongs to I'll pay them for it, of
course, but there was no one to ask. :-)
