The GOP's first choice was Joementum - the only reason he imagined he could win and decided to run. I remember a GOP strategist "advising us" in 2001 (the Spin Room) to pick him.
Edwards was the second choice. Dean became a pipe dream for them - they really wanted him - civil Unions in vermont, sealed records, temper, prone to gaffes.
As Dean started to show his problems under the front runner glare, the Mass Court rendered their gay marriage decision. That's when kerry sudenly started to get good polls vs bush at all the strategic moments. The electibility myth was born.
Edwards was cultivated frantically - to stop Clark in the South, and also to hopefully replace Kerry - especially after he successfully repelled the intern volley - proving a tougher opponent to W than originally expected.
This is where this confession comes in:

I think I speak for many people in the press corps when I say we've been trying harder to get you nominated than you have. Ron Brownstein and Larry King practically begged you tonight to give voters a reason not to choose Kerry."
