"Perhaps anxiety is inevitable during a family's first steps into a tough domain, but Wes Jr. says his parents are only being realistic. Already, two other generals have denounced Clark as a candidate: General Tommy Franks, the commander of the war in Iraq, and General Hugh Shelton, who served as chairman of the joint chiefs, each hammered at Clark's qualifications in vague but vehement statements. (Clark dismissed their comments as "army gossip.") If Wes Jr.s father loses the nomination battle because of further opaque character critiques, the general might have many fewer private-sector prospects. "I don't think it's a remote possibiity," Wes Jr. says, meaning a real one. "The Republicans destroy people, but we're willing to risk it."  --from the Elle article, "Mucho Macho Wes Clark" 3/04
--The General risked more than lost income while he was campaigning. He risked future income potential as well.
